Sensory Activity For Kids:

Outdoor color changing volcano activity

Explode. Color change. Wow! “Let’s do it again, mommy”, your kids say as they watch the magic of a color changing volcano unfold.

Most kids have seen and participated in traditional volcano eruption kids activities but most haven’t seen a color changing volcano activity. It’s so easy to take two colors and let the volcano change to the mixed colors.

This activity is inspired by ideas from Outdoor color changing volcano activity.

This activity is great to teach your kids:

Creative activities help children express themselves and create something from nothing, explore materials and activities and use their imagination.

Colour recognition activities helps children get to know the different colors and color blending and matching.

Sensory play is play that involves all the senses - taste, sound, sight, touch and smell. Sensory play is very beneficial to children. Research shows that sensory play builds nerve connections in the brain’s pathways, which lead to the child’s ability to complete more complex learning tasks. Sensory play is also very relaxing and rejuvenating to children.

Step 1

Gather all the supplies

Step 2

Fill the cup 2/3 full with water

Step 3

Add 4 tablespoons baking soda, 1 color of paint/coloring and 1 teaspoon dish soap. Stir.

Step 4

Let your kids pour in the vinegar into the cup

Step 5

When the eruption is over. Add in the other color to the cup. Add more vinegar and watch it change color.

This color changing volcano was a lot of fun to do, and the color changing effect was something special.

I would just suggest using food coloring or paint that won't stain the surrounding areas.

This is going to be the easiest baking soda and vinegar volcano you ever make. So easy, in fact, that in addition to doing it at home I’ve also done it several times with my preschool classes! It’s an awesome way to include some STEM learning in my preschool curriculum.
