Art Activity For Kids:

Splat painting

Oh what a fun and messy activity this is! Kids splat paint with rice in a stocking.

I like this activity because it is a great gross motor activity, where kids use their arms and legs and have some messy fun. All you need are rice, stockings and paper and paint to do this activity.

Kids take the rice filled stocking, dip it into paint and make beautiful splat painting art with it.

This activity is inspired by ideas from Splat painting.

This activity is great to teach your kids:

Gross motor activities include activities that works the large muscles, such as walking, running, throwing, lifting, kicking, etc. These skills also relate to body awareness, reaction speed, balance and strength.

Hand eye coordination activities help kids use their hands (and muscles) and eyes at the same time. When the two work together, young children begin to increase their ability to pick up, grasp, and manipulate objects.

Sensory play is play that involves all the senses - taste, sound, sight, touch and smell. Sensory play is very beneficial to children. Research shows that sensory play builds nerve connections in the brain’s pathways, which lead to the child’s ability to complete more complex learning tasks. Sensory play is also very relaxing and rejuvenating to children.

Step 1

Cut off the legs of the stockings.

Step 2

Fill each stocking leg with 1 cup of rice.

Step 3

Knot the stockings to seal them.

Step 4

Show your child how to use the stocking to paint, and then stand back!

My preschooler son and I enjoyed splat painting with the rice while my daughter was a bit resistant to give it a go. It made for a beautiful artwork that we can use for wrapping paper.

This activity is a bit on the messy side so it will really helps if you do it outside where there is a hose nearby to clean everything up quickly.

Put some paint on the paper and place on the ground. Let them place the stockings on the paint and make patterns with the stockings.
